meet representative Barbara Gervin‑Hawkins

First elected in 2016, she has served continuously since then, running unopposed in every Democratic primary after suing her competition off the ballot on multiple occasions — until now.

Barbara co-founded the George Gervin Academy, a charter school in Bexar County, raising real concerns about her ties to charter interests and how they influence her policy decisions. She also serves as vice-chair of the House Select Committee on Educational Opportunity & Enrichment.

barbara's Controversial history & Voting record

For years, Barbara’s career has been defined not by service to her community, but by a pattern of corruption and unfair practices that protect her power at the expense of the people she represents. From using the courts to silence challengers and avoid competition, to building her political influence on the back of charter school interests, she has relied on backroom deals and corporate funding to maintain her seat. While families across Texas struggle with rising costs, failing schools, and a broken healthcare system, Barbara has stayed silent — protecting her own position rather than fighting for her district.

- Abuse of the Courts to Silence Competition
Barbara has repeatedly used lawsuits to knock opponents off the ballot, ensuring she could run unopposed in Democratic primaries. This is not the behavior of a leader who welcomes accountability — it’s the behavior of someone determined to protect their power at all costs.

- Ties to Charter School Interests
As co-founder of the George Gervin Academy, Barbara is deeply tied to the charter school industry. This raises serious conflicts of interest, especially as she now serves as vice-chair of the House Select Committee on Educational Opportunity & Enrichment. While public schools in her district remain underfunded and overburdened, she has sided with a system that drains resources from neighborhood schools and funnels them into private hands.

- Silent Record in Office
Despite nearly a decade in the Texas Legislature, Barbara has failed to introduce or fight for legislation that directly benefits her district. On major issues facing Texas — from housing costs to healthcare to public education — she has stayed on the sidelines, leaving her constituents without a voice.

- Corporate Influence and Refusal to Stand Up
Barbara is funded by major corporations and special interests. When conflicts arise, instead of fighting for her community, she refuses to vote. Time and again, she has chosen silence over action — allowing harmful policies to advance without opposition.

- Failure of Leadership in a Time of Crisis
At a moment when Texans face skyrocketing rents, crumbling schools, and a mental health system in collapse, Barbara has not only failed to lead but actively shielded herself from accountability. Her silence and inaction have left working families behind.

We Deserve Better

For too long, our district has been stuck with a representative who puts corporations, charter school interests, and her own political survival above the people she was elected to serve. She has stayed silent on the issues that matter most, refused to take stands, and allowed our communities to fall further behind.

We deserve better — and that’s exactly what I’m fighting for. My campaign isn’t backed by corporations or special interests. My only commitment is to the people of this district, and every decision I make will start and end with one question: Does this make life better for working families?

- Real Public School Reform
I will fight to end the failed playbook of standardized testing and underfunding. Instead, we will reform curriculum to prioritize collaboration, compassion, emotional intelligence, and real-world skills. Public schools must be places where kids learn how to succeed in life — not just how to pass a test.

- Using the Surplus for Families, Not Sitting in Austin
While billions of state dollars sit unused, families across Texas struggle with rent, utilities, and food. I will fight to expand assistance programs funded by the surplus, because all it takes is one bad week for a working family to lose everything. A true safety net should protect people when life happens.

- Standing Up on Every Bill
Unlike my opponent, I won’t stay silent when corporate conflicts appear. I will take a stand on every bill and push legislation that benefits people, not corporations or lobbyists. Texans deserve a representative who shows up, takes votes, and fights relentlessly for them.

- Overhauling Mental Healthcare
Mental health is the foundation of a healthy society. I will prioritize hiring and supporting competent healthcare workers with fair pay, strong benefits, and real incentives. I will fight for an overhaul of the system based on research-driven practices — ensuring patients get the care and medication they need immediately, not months later.

- People Before Power
I will never sue challengers off the ballot. I will never bow to corporate donors. And I will never sit silent while our communities suffer. My commitment is to open, honest, and accountable leadership that fights for fairness and dignity for every Texan.

We deserve a representative who will stand up, speak out, and deliver. That’s the leadership I promise to bring to this district.

Why Your Support Matters

This campaign isn’t funded by corporations, lobbyists, or special interests — it’s powered by people like you. Every dollar we raise goes directly into reaching voters, building our movement, and making sure our community finally has a voice at the Capitol.

My opponent has corporate donors and establishment backing. We only have each other. That’s why every donation matters — no amount is too small. With your support, we can take on entrenched power, expose corruption, and fight for a Texas that works for all of us.
